Where the math comes from

Every formula on this site matches a named published reference: the National Weather Service calculator sheets for vapor pressure, station pressure, pressure altitude, virtual temperature, and density altitude; the FAA Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge for the standard atmosphere and conversion table; the 1976 U.S. Standard Atmosphere for the density profile racing tools use. The implementation is unit-tested against the published worked examples — the FAA table values and the classic 5,050-ft/95° example among them — before anything ships.

Where the data comes from

Airport identifiers, names, and field elevations come from the FAA National Airspace System Resources subscription (28-day cycle effective 2026-08-06). Airport activity ranking comes from the FAA Terminal Area Forecast 2025 final, FY2024 actuals. Monthly temperatures are NOAA U.S. Climate Normals (1991–2020), matched to the nearest suitable weather station for each field — each airport page names its station and the distance. All three are U.S. Government public-domain datasets.

The safety line

Density altitude is safety-adjacent, so the site holds one rule everywhere: tools report the air, never a decision. No output here is a takeoff, landing, or go/no-go judgment. Performance numbers come from your POH; weather comes from official briefing sources; this site is for training and reference.
